Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)

Energy Performance Certificates are required for qualifying buildings to measure and disclose energy performance in line with national regulations. This service includes a full technical evaluation of building energy use and the preparation of certified documentation for submission to SANEDI.

  • Data collection
  • On-site assessments
  • Utility verification
  • SANS 1544 calculations
  • Submission to SANEDI
Commercial, institutional, and public-sector buildings.

SSEG Registration & EGI Compliance

Grid-connected solar, battery and small wind systems must meet specific engineering and regulatory requirements before approval. This service provides the technical guidance, compliance verification and documentation needed to support municipal SSEG applications and Eskom EGI requirements.

Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) registration is a regulatory process required for grid-connected solar PV, battery and small wind systems. For homeowners, it is primarily about safety, legal compliance and risk reduction, rather than direct financial return.
SSEG registration provides peace of mind by confirming that a system has been installed responsibly and does not pose a risk to the property or the electricity network. It also reduces exposure to penalties and future disputes.

Key benefits include:
  • Confirmation that the system is safe for the home and the wider electricity network
  • Reduced risk of municipal penalties for unregistered systems
  • Mandatory compliance if electricity is exported to the grid
  • Stronger position when dealing with insurance claims
Beyond the electrician’s Certificate of Compliance (CoC), SSEG registration specifically verifies that:
  • The electricity generated does not exceed what the property’s internal wiring can safely handle
  • Electricity is not exported to the grid unintentionally, or that a bidirectional meter is installed where export is intended
  • Battery systems do not recharge too rapidly after outages, preventing network overloads

These checks are designed to protect both the homeowner and the public electricity infrastructure.
Municipalities have the authority to issue fines where SSEG systems are installed but not registered. While enforcement practices vary, the legal obligation to register remains in place.
Registration is also a mandatory requirement for homeowners who wish to export electricity to the grid and access export tariffs.
Although SSEG registration does not automatically guarantee insurance cover, many insurers require that:
  • The system is legally installed
  • A valid CoC is in place
  • Municipal registration has been completed

In the event of fire, damage or electrical faults, proper registration can significantly reduce the risk of claims being disputed or rejected due to non-compliance.
The debate between Eskom, municipalities and industry bodies has largely focused on whether professional engineers should be required to sign off small residential systems.
While Eskom has removed the requirement for Professional Engineer approval, proper technical documentation and registration remain necessary, and there are unavoidable costs associated with this process.
In the event of fire, damage or electrical faults, proper registration can significantly reduce the risk of claims being disputed or rejected due to non-compliance.
As municipalities continue to automate SSEG registration, administrative effort and associated costs are expected to reduce over time.
  • Pr. Eng sign-off where required
  • Engineering documentation
  • EGI compliance reporting
  • Municipal submission support
Note: Eskom no longer needs Pr. Eng sign-off → but EGI compliance report is still needed.

03

Export-to-Grid & Smart Meter Applications (City of Cape Town)

Exporting electricity to the grid requires formal approval and the correct metering setup. This service helps property owners navigate the City of Cape Town’s application process, ensuring systems are eligible, compliant and properly prepared for legal energy export.

  • Eligibility assessment
  • Application document preparation
  • Smart meter support
  • Grid export compliance guidance

04

Small Wind Generator Land-Use Submissions

Small wind installations often require municipal land-use approval before installation. This service supports the preparation of technical information, zoning considerations and formal submissions to help ensure applications meet City of Cape Town planning requirements.

  • Zoning evaluation
  • Technical documentation
  • Municipal land-use submission

05

Energy Efficiency & Tax Incentive Advisory

Improving energy efficiency can reduce operating costs and unlock financial incentives. This service identifies practical efficiency opportunities and provides the technical assessments needed to support claims for energy-related tax incentives based on verified savings.

  • Energy efficiency assessments
  • Identifying savings opportunities
  • Tax incentive qualification documentation

06

On-Site Energy Measurement & Data Logging

Accurate energy data is essential for system design, troubleshooting and compliance verification. This service involves short-term on-site measurements using professional logging equipment to capture real-world load profiles, demand patterns and equipment performance.

  • Load profile measurements
  • Peak demand analysis
  • Equipment behaviour logging
  • EPC + SSEG performance validation data
